Bagnets and dragnets
These nets are short and deep – the main difference from beach seine nets
Usage
- fishing from drained ponds and storage ponds actively
- fishing large amounts of fish in small water volumes
The principle is to catch fish while dragging the net through water with both ends
The usage of a bagnet and dragnet
- haul – the movement of the net throughout water is done by individuals
- net moves through the water column and catches fish
- fish are accumulated in the net during haul
- net creates a bag where fish concentrate during haul
- after the haul ends, the net is pulled to the boat
- net is pulled to the boat with caution to avoid damaging fish
- bagnet and dragnet are not used for pulling fish from water, or other fish manipulation
- fish are only removed with handling equipment
- hand net, dip net, fry dip net – according to fish size
Design
- polyamide knotless net with skewed mesh
- mesh size 6 – 30 mm
- thread thickness 1.4 – 2.5 mm (210/6 – 210/48)
- net is sewn into the shape of a bag – “net core”
- perimeter is strengthened with two mesh rows made from thicker thread
- upper and lower part of the net is threaded through with thick plaited ropes
- net has a buoyancy line with floats
- net has a lead line with sewn in weights
- net ends haves sewn/ attached wooden or metal poles
- poles – used for hauling the net and net depth regulation
- net ends have a heavy brace to which the pulling rope is attached

Usage
- regulates the depth of the lead line during haul
- prevents taking up mud into the net
- helps to more easily catch fish in the net

Dragnet

Design
- short net with deep bag
- useful in drained ponds, fish storage ponds, channels
- bag depth may be equal to net width, i.e. 1:1 (e.g. net width 3 m, bag depth 3m)
- bag is square or rectangle-shaped with beveled sides
- beveling of the bag starts at 1/3 or 1/2 or 2/3 of bag depth
- beveling determines possible amount of fish caught
Dragnet is useful in fish storage ponds
- using a small width, you can achieve a large depth, possibly catching a large amount of fish in a limited space
