Beach seine nets
Beach seine nets can be used to catch fishes in ponds, rivers, reservoirs, fish storage ponds and other water bodies.The principle of this catching method is to catch fishes while towing the net through the water by one or both net ends.
Beach seine nets can be used for sampling all age and size classes of fishes, from fry, small species, etc. as well as for commercial fishing, depending on the size of the net used.
General principles for using a beach seine net
Haul - the net is moved through the water by a staff, vehicle or boat or some combination. While the net is being hauled, the net is capturing fishes. Fishes are gathered in the net approximately in the middle. The net may contain a cod-end for gathering fishes.
Gathering fishes to one side of the net should be carried out preferentially in deeper water to ensure enough space for the caught fishes and also to prevent damage to the net.
A beach seine net should not be used for pulling the catch at a shore or a boat or for other inappropriate manipulation of the fish.
Fish are always removed from the net using hand nets or landing nets, depending on fish size.
Beach seine net set-up
Beach seine nets are constructed in different shapes and sizes.
The body of the net is usually in the form of a strip of netting. If the net contains the cod-end, then the strip is broadened in the middle.
The whole net is strengthen along its perimeter by one to two lines of larger meshes from thicker material.
The top and the bottom line are threaded through by thick spun ropes. Floats and the lead line are connected to the top and to the bottom line, respectively. The lead in the lead line is woven with textile fibre to the form of a rope.
Beach seine nets for pond fisheries are usually provided with maces at both ends. Maces are wooden bars and if they are lead in a vertical position they enable control the haul and the depth of the net.
The ends of beach seine nets for research have loops for lashing one or more towropes.

Beach seine nets designs:
Fry beach seine net - for catching fish fry and smaller fish species.
These nets are available in arbitrary sizes and shapes. The minimal mesh size is 2 mm (knot-to-knot) for tulle material. The range of mesh sizes is 3, 4, 6, and 10 mm for common netting with thread material 210/4, 210/6, 210/9 and 210/14, respectively (see List of materials).
Smaller and lighter nets are designed with smaller floats in sizes 10 x 3 cm (length x width) and with the lead line up to 30 g.m-1.
Standard beach seine net - for catching all age and size classes of fishes.
Sizes and designs of standard beach seine nets vary depending on the net application and requirements. They are adjusted to each customer's desires.
Materials
Netting without knots from polyamide (PA) fibres are used for beach seine nets. The knotless net is careful for caught fishes.
The range of possible mesh sizes is from 2 mm to 30 mm (common carp mesh size).
The thread diameter of common netting is quite thin - 1.2 or 1.4 mm (technical description see details 210/6 - 210/28). The aim is to have a net as light as possible
- to be handled as easily in the air as in the water
- to be easily handed out of the boat during net installation
- to be towed through the water column quickly and easily
- to be operated with minimal manpower
Nets are seamed twice along the perimeter by polyamide strings of thread diameter 6 - 14 mm, depending on the net size.
Floats on the top line are from polystyrene (PES) and the distance between them is 40 - 100 cm.
The weight of the lead line ranges from 80 to 200 g.m-1.
Beach seine nets are constructed from a net strip of rectangular shape or the strip can be detracted toward edges - then the middle part is broader and creates a bag of cod end.
